due to an increase in the production of solid urban waste, a result of the development of consumption in society, there is an overload in recycling materials discarded in urban centres. incinerator bottom ash comes from the incineration of part of this urban waste.
the high volume of incinerator bottom ash gives rise to sustainability problems, as it accumulates and occupies large areas of land when deposited in landfills.
it is estimated that in Europe, [2.2 billion tonnes](https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/headlines/society/20180328STO00751/waste-management-in-the-eu-infographic-with-facts-and-figures) are produced yearly, and 46% of the waste in portugal is deposited in landfills. assuming the difficulty that exists in reducing waste production - as this task implies social and economic actions that are difficult to achieve in the short term - it is necessary to resort to technological strategies that help mitigate this problem more immediately.
for this reason, a material incorporating the incinerator bottom ashes in its constitution was studied and developed.
